Constructed Landscape
Roger Fenton
The photographer Roger Fenton had included a baron waste land into the composition with steep hills in the desert. The second photographer Richard prince had included a fictional character based on real life people both photographers have excluded any greenery. the first photographer Roger Fenton might have the relationship of comfort with the landscape for example it might Be his favourite place and comforts him. The photographer Richard prince had included a cowboy since it might of been his favourite non fictional character. the photographer Roger Fenton has taken the photo from a low vantage point capturing the hills on a incline compared the the photographer Richard prince that has taken the photo on a straight vantage point.in the first photo taken by Roger Fenton we are quite far from the subject but he had used the zoom function to create the feeling of bering closer compared to Richard prince who has taken the photo from close.
In my photographs the subject of the photo is a building This is an abstract photo In this for the is a building that has been cut out and multiple different kinds of backgrounds Take from places take around the school This picture is different from Real life since the buildings are in the sky There are a multitude of colours ranging from purple yellow purple and yellow and normal skylines Nearly all of the photos of a light tone to them What part of the photos That struck me of the background because they’re all different and there is a range of colours in each of them
both photos are very similar but yet so different but there's one thing that could make them be described similar is the fact that there both sea scapes. The photo on the right has been disassembled and reconnected as a new photo enveloping different types of environments as you can see in the top left it has a piece of land incorporated into the photo almost looks natural due to the ascetic of the photo. Compared to the one on the left it looks like a normal landscape photo of the sea with the rocks on the on thew shore line I would rather be in the one on the photo left because it seams safer and the one on the left feels unstable. Overall if I had to use one word for each photo I would choose calm for the photo on the left because off the feeling on calmness and security that it gives compared to the one on the right. One word I would use for the second photo is unstable because of the uncertainty of the space behind the gaps and what they could hold
Dionne Lee Draft
Drafts from Dionne Lee on Vimeo.
- I thought that the image was difficult to watch because I thought it wasn't exciting as it was too slow and it had a lack of transitions.
- I think the work of Dionne lee is different because of the way she creates her pieces. she slowly disassembles photos extracting the parts she likes and reconstructs new pieces with the parts she likes. She uses multiple photos of different landscape.
- This work relates to the theme as she constructs landscapes by deconstructing and creating new images of landscapes.
- This is different from the work that I've seen as there are multiple landscapes merged into one but recorded by film in real time.
- The images range from images from books, magazine, and some may be taken by her.
My draft
- I think my draft is mediocre because it has variation of photos but it also feels very repetitive
- My images came from various artists featured in magazines and books
- I would like to add more variety to the photos used and I would like to remove the blue background because it doesn't fit well with the photo being constructed
- If I was to redo this exercise I would choose a better variety of photos
Hiroshi Sugimoto
- Hiroshi Sugimoto Is a Japanese photographer born in Tokyo Japan in 1948
- He focuses on landscapes that he turns negative
- He focuses mostly on Theaters and seascapes
- His Works are all over the world in prominent museums such as the tate gallery in London and San Francisco museum of modern art
- His works have earned him many awards such as the national arts clubs medal of honour in photography in 2018
- His works are very similar but very different because of the landscapes he photographs
- one of his works called Gemsbok and is a photograph of chamois a type of goat-antelope
Ray metzker
Ray Metzker's images from his 'Pictus Interruptus' are abreaction's of the landscapes. When I look at the images I see a series of lines, shapes and light and shadow. There are several points of interest within these images. The landscapes are barely seen through the shapes. I think that they are in black and white to further disorientate the viewer. my favorite photo from ray metzker's pictus inturptus is 80 ct-5 because it has both an unknown section covered with a fence and a truck hidden behind the fence
I had tried to create my own Pictus Interruptus and also taken blurry photos and I felt like there was a-lot to improve on I would have personally preferred to have had the photo more blurry and to also have a more elusive subject . Next time I would prefer to have more higher quality photos and a range of different subjects that are hard to perceive. So I will go with the technique of taking blurred photos. This photo is the most complete in my opinion as it captures both Pictus Interruptus and my want of blurred photos. while taking photos I would want more of them to follow this example
Charles Wilkin
- Charles wilkin creates Collages using bright colours and a lot of textures
- the technique used is special as he does not care about creating a subject he cares about creating something abstract
- while watching this video I discovered that photography does not need to be normal it can be anything you can imagine
- the colours and textures are very interesting and exciting as he does not always use one texture he has a variety of colours/textures
- The landscapes are very enigmatic as you can never find the subject as he has removed it
- His works are a the same as his ideals of wanting to be different as they are never the same every landscape is unique
Penelope Umbrico
My gut instinct when I look at this image is that I feel happy and the images bring joy to me. There are lots of bright colours and the fact that each image is made up of multiple images is interesting, I like the grid aspect of the work and the presentation. I discovered that the photographer has created these images uses lots of photographic apps to experiment with the digital aspect of the work using various apps to create the different hues of some of the work. She uses websites like Craigslist and flicker to gain images then she retakes the photos with the use of one of her hundreds of photo Apps to edit the photos then Arranges the photos in a disorienting fashion. The photo suns from sunsets from flicker this is a collage that shows the sun in multiple backgrounds these where taken all around the world at different times but this whole picture was made is 2006 it was taken to show the sun in its raw form I feel like the goal of the photo was reached at it made me feel type of way.today it has a great effect as the photo is one of a kind.
Experimentation
This is my first response to adding photographs in a grid as a response to the artist Penelope Umbrico. I was influenced by this photographer but wanted to respond in my own way. I took images of the school landscape and added them in a grid. I like the images on the bottom row as although they are landscapes they are reflections and the angle in which they are taken is also quite abstract. I would like to try this again using unusual photographs.
I have decided to focus on the use of reflections with the help of windows as one of my final pieces is inspired by Penelope Umbrico's grid style and use the real life photo and the reflection to create a reflective grid where every photo has its reflection. Some of the photos taken where hard to acquire as I needed to be in a certain position just to achieve the reflection. The photo with the bird and the smoke tower is a one of a kind photo so I will try to create something with it as my final piece will be a collage of reflections. I wanted to focus more on taking photographs of landscapes as reflections.
I had taken my last set of photos that are based on reflections and real life and will proceed to insert these photos into indesign to create a grid format to create another piece with these photos. Things that went well during this photo shoot is that the mirror was just Able to capture a reflection of what I had wanted and the positioning of the mirror allowed me to capture each reflection in a way that allowed it to show the whole subject there are any things I would like to Improve on such as the the quality and size of the mirror although I was able to gain a reflection I would of preferred to of had a clearer and larger reflection of my subject and also have less of the natural background behind the mirror. For these photos I would like to use photoshop to create double exposure and create a image with both the reflection and the original photo
I have selected the images above as they were taken as a reflection. Tomorrow I would like to create double exposure on all my photos and and play around with the colour and place them in my final format of a grid
Today was a continuation on what I had been preparing for the last previous lessons.I had selected the photos that I had taken in previous lessons and had edited them in the adobe photoshop and played with the exposure of each photo and also played with multiple colours that I found interesting and included them into the photos taken and the following pieces are three of the final pieces for my portfolio
Development
I decided to project some of the images inspired by Dafna Talmor.I have chosen some images to project
I have created a video similar to Dionne lee but I had found hers very uninteresting as it was very long and had nothing but the photos to draw you in so I had decided to create a video of my own and decided to but include the things I would find more entertaining and so would others I had hand picked both the constructed landscapes and the music that I feel Dionne lee was lacking and I feel like I have created something that me and others could enjoy
component 1 evaluation
Throughout this whole component I have focused on many artists that I had taken an interest in that where displayed on the Thomas Tallis gcse photography page like Roger Fenton, Dionne Lee, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Charles Wilkin, Ray metzker and Penelope Umbrico focusing on various mediums such as video's, photography, film photography, slides. I had tried to try something different from the artist Roger Fenton who had focused on barron and empty landscapes and tried to incorporate some of the artist Ray metzker ideas on interrupting the photo with abstract shapes and items.I have carried out a multitude of experiments based on the Artists I have researched
When it had come time for me to develop my final piece I had taken aspects of there work such as Penelope Umbrico and her grid formation Dionne lee and her use of a video to show off her art I have researched all these artists for a long period of time selecting the certain qualities I wanted my final pieces to include. I have used a multitude of the photography threshold concepts such as photography has many genres some old some borrowed and some new, photography is a hybrid kind of picture and many More I had aligned my work with my beliefs trying to make something that resonated with me throughout this component and to me photography is a way of expressing yourself throughout the use of your creations during the start of this project I had very one sided views on photography but through the development of my work I had also realised that I was also developing myself
